200 BCE-1000 CE
The first evidence of renewable energy originated back in ancient times and was used too ease there work load resulting in less physical labor. Europeans invent first waterwheel to power a mill. They were used for a wide range of early industrial processes. In present day eastern Iran windmills were being used for grinding corn and raising water from rivers and streams to irrigate gardens or farms.
1860 CE
Augustine Mouchot a French man concerned about the depletion of fossil fuels develops the first solar powered system using a series of mirrors to concentrate sunlight to produce steam and run other machinery.
1876 CE
William Grylls Adams and a student of his discover Selenium reacts with sunlight producing an electrical current.
1888 CE
Charles F. Brush creates the first windmill in the world that can generate electricity.
1970 CE
Geothermal Steam Act of 1970 passed which allowed leasing of Federal Land to encourage the further development of the Geothermal energy industry.
1975 CE
Federal involement in wind energy furthers wind energy technology. This research was a combined effort from the US government and NASA which resulted in many of the wind turbine technology that we use today.
1977 CE
The Solar Energy Research Institute also known as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is launched and is the first federal facility completely dedicated to collecting power from the sun.
1996 CE
In April 1996 Solar Two began operating and by April 1999 had ceased operations having met all objectives being to collect and store solar energy efficiently and to generate electricity when needed by utility and its customers.
